On My Block – A Playlist

Yo. Another Netflix show soundtrack?? I see you rolling your eyes, but university is out for the semester, and after working from 9-5:30 (or grabbing lunch with my friends/recording new music) all day, there’s nothing I want to do more than climb onto my couch and binge something on Netflix.

Clearly, I’ve been doing just that. If you didn’t catch my last playlist based on a Netflix show soundtrack, check out my selection from The Society, a show that has me so excited and amped up for the next season, it’s becoming a joke.

However, y’all can read, and judging by the title, clearly we’re not talking about The Society today. Today’s post is dedicated to my latest Netflix conquest, On My Block.

If you haven’t watched On My Block, first of all; why? And second of all; you’re missing out. I’m always down for a show that deals with people of colour, teen drama and the nuances of community, which this show has in abundance. The show centres around a group of four friends going through high school, dealing with love, violence, money and family matter, in a rough neighbourhood run by gangs. There’s a lot to grasp in this show, it’s a brilliant opportunity to pull aside the privilege blindfold and really open your eyes to realities of life for some communities.

With all of that in mind, I truly believe one of the show’s strongest assets, is it’s soundtrack. It captures the essence of the show so perfectly, and I found myself pausing several times or rewinding to fully take in each scene and the way the music always worked perfectly. For this show, a standout for me was Parachute, by AM!R, which I paused the show to search for immediately. Note that I’m also partial to my fair share of hip-hop, rap and Latin music, which this show has plenty of.

So, here’s my playlist of favourite songs from On My Block.

Sorrows – BLESSED
Swang N Bang – Kirko Bangz
Eye for an Eye – SiDizen King, The Strike
One and Only – BLESSED
I’m Your Puppet – James & Bobby Purify
Bailazo – Bang Data
Electric – Alina Baraz, Khalid
Ratatá – Niña Dioz
Buscando Un Bandido – Sicko Soldado
Crumbs – Jordan Dennis
Devil’s Whisper – Raury
La Noche – Joe Arroyo, La Verdad
Cherry Hill – Russ
Insecure – Brent Faiyaz
Sweetest Life – KWAYE

Let me know if you’ve watched the show or plan to watch it – I’d love to chat about it with some of you guys in the comments!

Electric has actually been one of my fave songs for a couple years now, so cool they included it on the soundtrack! It’s actually how I first got introduced to Khalid – the blend of their voices together is insane! xx

Same!! I discovered it through a dance video on YouTube so I was super stoked to hear it in the playlist! I heard it when I was first getting into Khalid, so I was introduced to Alina through it – such a beautifully blended song! xx
