Alas, another Netflix original has fallen prey to my stream of isolation binging, this time being Black Lightning, based on the DC comics. Once again, I’m thoroughly impressed by whoever it is at Netflix, managing the music direction, and picking the soundtrack for these shows, because nearly every single episode of the three seasons that are currently up, had incredible music in it.
The show, although primarily an action, super-hero series, is literally filled with genres of race, systematic oppression, socioeconomic status, drug addiction and gang violence, all tied up together with the ‘super’ genre in a manner that is so relevant and contextually current, watching it today.
The music in the show is a great mix of old school funk tracks, some jazz, blues, soul, and then a bunch of newer artists, hip hop, rap and RnB tracks, and it all went perfectly with each scene.
Here’s a break down of some of my favourite songs from each season!
Let me know if you end up watching Black Lightning as well – I’d love to hear what you think, not just of the music but of the show as a whole!!
