Like A Version – The Best Of

Like A Version – The Best Of

Hello friends!

Today’s post, is yet another post that consists of ya girl basically plugging all my favourite live covers and musicians.

If you’ve been here for a little while or read some of my recent posts, you’d have picked up that the hit radio station Triple J, is one of my favourite radio stations, and go-to’s for good music and live acts. A ton of the artists I recommend come up through the Triple J through rotation on the station or through winning one of their many competitions and playing some of the Triple J run festivals.

One of the much loved aspects of the Triple J universe, is the popular Like A Version sessions, where they bring incredible artists into the studio, and they put their own unique spin on some well known songs that they perform live as covers, some of which are then released on Spotify and YouTube.

There have been quite a few of these covers that end up circulating all over YouTube and Facebook and I do have a list of some of my favourites. There’s a lot of them.

So.

Here they are.

Like I said, there are a few, and this is after I cut the original list down, twice. Hopefully you found some time to get through some if not all of the videos above, I’d love to hear which ones you enjoyed! Let me know in the comments!

Finally Another Gig

Finally Another Gig

I know what you’re saying.

“Priya. You can’t possibly be growing any savings by going for so many gigs.”

And you’d be right. My bank account is constantly in a state of despair, shaking it’s fist at me as I continue to sign myself up for pre-sales and wait in criminally long online waiting lines for ticket sales, but alas, I can’t be stopped.

However.

This particular gig, was one of my own.

You may have remembered I mentioned that I had an upcoming performance in my Week In My Life, as within the week I had a rehearsal with my band.

Well, that was tonight (9/08), and yes. I am freshly showered, after spending the day anxiously waiting for my drummer and guitar player to pick me up, panicking that we were late, getting head shots, grabbing a traditional cheeky Nando’s for lunch, sound-checking and then performing to around 300-400 people, including family and friends who had come along to support. It was a hectic day. But I enjoyed it immensely.

The gig was at a large artist showcase, where artists, designers, hair and makeup artists, jewellery designers, dancers, photographers and musicians are selected to showcase their work. We were one of the three acts performing that night.

If you caught my ‘Week In My Life‘ post, you’d recall that for the last couple of Sunday’s I’ve been rehearsing with the boys in the band, trying out some songs, picking and scrapping songs and writing some of my own. About two weeks out from the show we even ended up swapping a song for a different one that had come up with while we were mucking around and jamming, but we finally settled on the set list of covers and original songs, which looked something like this;

  • Sunday Morning – Maroon 5
  • Stockholme – ORIGINAL
  • Who’s Loving You – Jackson 5
  • Toast – ORIGINAL
  • Finesse – Bruno Mars

Compared to the last time I had played the showcase, it was a lot more energetic and up tempo, definitely down to the addition of our drummer. Even the original songs, which the boys helped me finish were some of the grooviest I’ve ever written, and we got loads of compliments on my song Toast.

//possible single cover??//

That said, it was a long day in the lead up to the 20 minute set.

The boys picked me up around 3:20, and we made the mad dash of a drive to get just outside the city before 4:00, considering out head shot time slot was between 3:40 and 4:00. We definitely broke some speeding laws.

Taking head shots was both awkward and stupidly hilarious, as none of us are professionals in front of the camera, which resulted in all sorts of stupid conversation and questions arising in an effort to get ‘candid’ shots, which also resulted in the photographer pausing in between takes to laugh at our stupidity.

After we had our photos taken, we decided to run the risk of potentially losing our incredible parking spot, and head out for an early dinner. As has become the tradition during rehearsals, we headed to the nearest Nando’s for a feed.

By the time we finished up our dinner, it was time to head back for the sound check.

Sound check went great. It was the perfect opportunity to run through a couple of our songs, and we got a few claps from some of the artists who were setting up their work around the huge function hall.

Once we were done with soundcheck, it was basically an half an hour long waiting game for the doors to open, which we spent going around and looking at some of the art, chatting to (up) some of the artists, talking to one of the other bands and overall preparing for our set since we were first up.

A little after 7:00, the doors open, and people started to make their way in. A few moments later, and all our friends, as well as my family had joined us, and it was a great couple of minutes catching up and chatting with everyone.

A bit closer to 8, I was tapped on the shoulder by my guitarist, and so we headed towards the stage to get ready while the MC opened the night and began our introduction.

Honestly, the set could not have gone better. All of us improvised a little bit, much to the excitement of the other two musicians on stage, and having the boys behind me made me all that more confident. My guitarist absolutely nailed all his solos, and our drummer was a huge standout, especially during Finesse where he got a huge solo in place of me singing the bridge.

It was heaps of fun to get up on stage again, especially with the boys backing me up this time. Definitely keen to get going again.

Hello friends!

For today’s post I’m gonna be sharing an artist who I believe you all need in your life. I haven’t done an artist spotlight in a hot minute, and as much as I’ve been enjoying sharing some different posts with you, I’m super keen to share this artist.

If you’re not familiar with @paigesspace on Instagram, you’re about to be.

I discovered her through one of my favourite singers/people, through whom all is good in the world, Billie Eilish, who came across the New Zealand singer’s account and promptly became obsessed with Paige, which subsequently turned to her spamming her Instagram account story with videos of Paige’s numerous covers and original songs she has posted on her Instagram account, which is linked above.

As soon as I saw the first video, or more so, heard her voice, I jumped right over onto Paige’s account, and began my investigations. I was not disappointed.

Tell me this doesn’t give you chills.

We all know how much I love Done For Me by Kehlani and Charlie Puth, but I didn’t think I could ever love a cover version, an incredibly original cover version, this much. It’s perfect.

So since Billie Eilish bestowed her gift upon the world and my Instagram account, I’ve been eagerly awaiting new covers and videos from Paige, whether that be on her Instagram, or her YouTube channel, which is equally as generous.

Which made the news of her single release, So Far, all the more exciting, considering all the newly gained, and greatly deserved fans she has welcomed to the family following Billie’s promotion.

So Far came out a couple days ago, and let me tell you. If you’re a fan of Billie Eilish, Kehlani, any good music, you have to listen to it.

I’ve been listening to it on repeat this entire morning, especially while I write this, and it’s yet to get old.

Paige’s voice is probably one of the smoothest voice I’ve ever heard on social media. We all know how much I love to Alice Kristiansen (@alicelk) and I’m 100% that Paige is on the same level, I definitely put those two on the same shelf.

So Far reminds me a lot of two of Kehlani’s acoustic releases, Honey and Again, both of which are beautiful songs. Speaking of, there’s also this cover up on her Instagram to really drive my point home…

Paige’s voice is so smooth and mellow, but you can hear how clear and strong it is at the same time. I won’t talk about the guitar because you should just feel my love for it it in your own heart the second you hear that tone. The harmonies at the end nearly made me fling my laptop across the room when I heard them, this girl has me falling in love with no-one to fall in love with.

Definitely check Paige out. She truly tugs on the heart strings, and I don’t have a heart to tug on, so you know she’s doing something right.

I’d love to know what you guys think of Paige, I’ll probably continue to obsess over her voice and her music until she releases and another album or something.

Hey friends!

I actually haven’t sat down and blogged, yuck I low-key hate saying that but I love it at the same time, in a hot minute, just because of how far ahead my scheduling ‘game has been. Again, ew, excuse that, I’m never saying that again.

So I thought while I have a day or two off uni (more like I have one class and I refuse to travel an hour either way into the city for a single one hour class that I definitely nearly fall asleep in anyway) I’d write up some posts for you guys. I also have an essay that I could very well start writing too, but priorities. Am I right?

Side-note; I’m also three coffees into my day, so you’ll be receiving the full affect of that in this post.

Tonight’s post is gonna be dedicated to sharing the literal ray of sunshine that is Alice Kristiansen. If you don’t know who Alice Kristiansen is, please pay attention. That was slightly aggressive but I’m passionate about this chic and the music she’s putting out into the world so I don’t regret it and I won’t be taking it back.

I first discovered her on YouTube. Kind of the unexpected avenue for Alice, considering how much her Instagram has been popping off lately, I mean, Shawn Mendes is surely trying to hit her up or something because it seems as if he’s liking her pictures and videos mere seconds after she uploads them.

Screen Shot 2018-05-17 at 5.31.51 pm

Besides the point.

I discovered her through YouTube, thanks to, once again, Daniel Caesar. I swear, that man leads to all things good. I was listening to an acoustic guitar cover of his song Blessed and lo and behold, there on the side bar is a video of Alice covering the same song. I don’t know what made me feel inclined to check it out because as much as I attribute some of my greatest finds to YouTube recommendations, I don’t click on them all that often, but for some reason I did. Thank god.

I can’t accurately describe the honey that is embedded within her voice, specifically in that video, so to avoid embarrassing myself, the only rational thing to do is to share the video below. You’re welcome. Enjoy.

Let’s talk.

  • The vibes. The vibes are unreal and I can’t fathom how beyond incredible this video feels, let alone sounds.
  • Not only that, but how effortless is it? This song is not an easy song to sing. Trust me. I won’t attempt to prove to you how hard it is to sing, but it’s not easy and she just…does it. Like that. Kinda rude, but bless her.
  • Not sure how, but you can literally feel the emotion in her voice. It’s probably down to how little is going on in the video, but it’s still so much more emotional that 90% of YouTube covers I’ve ever watched. The amount of chill, combined with the filter, combined with her voice which is out of this world, get me emotional as heck.
  • Also, can we talk about how annoyingly symmetrical her face is? People who look this good shouldn’t be this talented, please take one and move along. Cheers.

But yeah. That video kinda had me obsessed with Alice Kristiansen for weeks on end, until I followed her on Instagram and discovered the treasure trove of short covers, aesthetic as heck pictures and videos of a gal I just wanna be, to be quite frank with you.

Screen Shot 2018-05-17 at 5.33.51 pm

Did I mention Shawn Mendes earlier? Yeah? Well I don’t know but if something’s going on there, I’m calling it now, because after several people brought it to her attention that the dude was liking all her Instagram vids (I’m also sure that no-one needs it brought to their attention when Shawn Mendes likes their video but there were a lot of comments so Idontknow, don’t hold me accountable for my words please), only a few short days later, she posts this on YouTube.

Tell me you can’t watch this video, without turning into a literal sunflower. You can’t, and if you can, you’re lying.

The Lord is good, and if you search Alice Kristiansen on Spotify, you’re blessed with her artist page, which features not only more covers, but originals as well. Currently, my absolute favourite song is In The DarkIn The Dark and let me tell you, it’s a vibe. Not what I expected from Alice at all, especially because what I knew prior to that discovery was all that I had seen on her Instagram and YouTube, but I am loving it. The acoustic versions that are there also show the insane versatility of her voice. Have a listen.

Let me know if you listen to anything that I’ve linked or done any of your own searching for Alice, because it’s definitely worth your time. I’d love to know what you think!

Today I have another list of songs that I believe need to be shared and loved by others, so as is the nature of my blog, I’m going to aggressively share them with you. These songs are all covers.

I have pretty high standards when it comes to covers, because a lot of the time, they do fall short. Probably due to how emotionally invested and connected I get to the original song. Drunk In Love – Lakyn

Everybody Hurts – Jasmine Thompson

City Of Stars – Gavin James

Somewhere Over The Rainbow – Ariana Grande

Believe (triple j Like A Version) – DMA’s

Wild Thoughts – William Singe

We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off – Ella Eyra

If I Ain’t Got You – James Bay

Tears Dry On Their Own – Dua Lipa, Gallant

Torn – James TW

Boom Clap – Lennon and Maisy

…Baby One More Time – Ed Sheeran

Fancy – Xavier Dunn

Say My Name – William Singe

Justice Der

Justice Der

Okay my friends. Grab something to snack on because it’s an expectation that you literally watch what’s coming up.

Time and time again I find myself struggling to truly capture the essence of the specific guitar sound that has me frothing. It pulls at my hearts strings. Gives me shivers. It does something to me, and it bothers me to no end, that I can’t eloquently sum up how this guitar sounds, without using the incredibly over used go to phrase, “as heck“.

However.

That was before my discovery early last month, of the actual Guitar Hero, that is Justice Der. Justice is a jazz musician/student(???) from Canada, and started uploading guitar covers up on YouTube about six months ago. I stumbled upon him while listening to acoustic covers of Blessed by Daniel Caesar and noticed his jazz guitar cover on the sidebar, so my inquisitor self clicked on the video and was instantly blown away.

My dudes.

This is the guitar sound that I cannot do justice.

Oh my goodness and Justice plays it, puns.

Like are you hearing it? The sound and the tone of the guitar gives me shivers every single time I hear it. If someone told me this song was played at my funeral at the gates of Heaven I would not be mad at all. The lick at 3:21 blows my mind continuously, no matter how many times I listen, which so far is a lot, and I refuse to get over how effortlessly he plays. The sound and jazz style of his playing, is the sound I’ve tried and failed to convey to you all, for the past seven or so months, and it’s so satisfying to be able to show you exactly what I mean, and so consistently. Let’s watch some more.

And then, last month when I was listening to Best Part to practice for my gig, I glance to the side, and what do I see?

But guys. It get’s better. After a couple of weeks and months of people (ya girl included) begging Justice to do Get You by Daniel Caesar, he smashes it out of the park, yet again.

It’s so simple, but his style and the tone of the guitar just put you in this beautiful bubble of bliss, life hack. CRANK the volume up, put on a good pair of headphones (hey, maybe check out my post all about the best headphones out there???) and lose yourself in the sound.

As well as his clearly gifted playing talents, what is slightly more commendable, is the dudes work ethic. This year alone, he’s uploaded some 21 videos, some of them back to back and mere days apart. He choses the best songs, fixes the smoothest loops and creates guitar magic, it’s hard not be impressed over and over again.

It’s now become a part of my daily routine after I get home from wherever I am, whether it’s at university, or out with friends, or just bringing my day to a close. I most definitely have a playlist on YouTube just of Justice Der’s covers, which I throw on shuffle and blast for a solid twenty minutes or so as I chill out. Major key. Would definitely suggest. 10/10.

Hopefully you guys gave Justice a listen! If you want to hear more, you can find his:
Youtube channel, Instagram and Soundcloud
all linked above.

I cannot get enough, hopefully you all enjoy it just as much as I do, if not…more for me.

x
